After living in our house for a couple years, we decided it was time to update the master bath. We have a huge master bedroom, so we decided to convert some of that space to the bathroom floor plan by taking out the existing closet, enclosing the hall entrance to the bathroom, and making the bathroom only accessible from the bedroom.
Before - one sink, small floor space, and outdated tile
After - increased floor space, updated tile and cabinets, dressing area, double vanity... saved a lot of $$$ to keep the bath/shower in the same spot
These pictures were taken before the hardware was added. We have been enjoying the bathroom since August 2011, but we STILL do not have mirrors over our sinks. I decided that I didn't like the metallic mirror over the sink in the picture above, so I started searching for replacements.
My criteria were:
1. No more than about $50 per mirror (tight budget)
2. Light wood, but not white
3. Size of framed mirror 32" H x 24" W ish
After searching high and low, I was unable to find the perfect fit. So, I started to scour websites and stores of matching mirrors that could be refinished. I ended up with two of these from Lowe's:
And they have been sitting in my guest room for the past six months...
This week, the sun was shining, the air was warm, and I decided it was now or never for finishing those mirrors. I started by sanding, taping, and painting them with Kilz Cover Stain.
I let them dry for a couple hours and then painted them with the paint from my bathroom cabinets. One coat looked good to me, so (after drying) I sanded them down, and painted them with MinWax Wood Stain. They need a little more sanding and another coat of the stain, which I plan to finish over the weekend... I'll post final product pictures next week. Get excited!
*Does anyone know how to get dried paint off a mirror? I have used nail-polish remover, which works, but the hard to reach places under the mirror frame are tricky... I saw somewhere that hair conditioner and a single razor blade worked... Any experience with this?
