Crafternoon with Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Stenberg

Wow, it has been 2 months and a LOT has happened. This summer break has left much time for creativity, but not a lot of time in front of the computer.  So, it's time to catch up!

In June... my mom (Jill) and I spent 11 days in NYC studying with contemporary watercolorist, Timothy Clark at the Arts Students League.  Comprehensive post on that tomorrow, so stay tuned...

My friend, Jenny, and I sold a "crafternoon" in the St. Mary's auction this spring to help the Parents Association raise money for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiatives at the school. A second grade mom bought the item for her daughter and three friends, and Jenny and I had a great time making bulletin boards with them one day this summer.
These boards would be an inexpensive way to spruce up a home office or dorm room, too.
We started with 12x12 cork boards (sold in a pack of 4) and sprayed primer on them a few hours before the girls arrived. We then made a station for each girl with acrylic paint as well as buttons, pom poms, and plastic jewels, which we hot-glued on the head of a thumb tack for their picture pins.
The girls painted the boards, and while drying (next time we'll bring a hair dryer to quicken the process), they each cut four 12in pieces of ribbon. We then hot glued each to an edge of the board, and wrapped the ribbon over the edge and glued to the back.  We took an 18in piece of the same ribbon and attached it to the back of the board, tying the loose ends in a knot at the top.
I left my extra supply of glue sticks at home, so we ran out while working on board #3 (eek!).  Jenny ingeniously used thumb tacks (instead of hot glue) to secure the ribbon on the backside, and it gave it a cute grommeted look, so that's another option (no photo...sorry).
The girls stuck their decorated thumbtacks on the boards, and voila!, they were happy campers with cute new bulletin boards for their room!
